A Framework for Discussing e-Research Infrastructure Sustainability

چکیده
Introduction Reusable infrastructure, systems and components created by one or more people and intended to be used by others, have become essential for many types of research over the last century, from microscopes to telescopes, and from sequencers to colliders. Over the past few decades, most of the interfaces to research infrastructure, and in many cases, the infrastructure itself, has become digital. In this paper we discuss e-Research infrastructure, also called cyberinfrastructure, which has been defined by Craig Stewart as consisting of “... computing systems, data storage systems, advanced instruments and data repositories, visualization environments, and people, all linked together by software and high performance networks to improve research productivity and enable breakthroughs not otherwise possible.” [1] While research infrastructure as a whole is important, it is useful to consider infrastructure elements as well, as the elements comprise the overall infrastructure. Each element can be discussed in different contexts:

A New Framework for Increasing the Sustainability of Infrastructure Measurement of Smart Grid
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is one of the most significant applications of the Smart Grid. It is used to measure, collect, and analyze data on power consumption. In the AMI network, the smart meters traffics are aggregated in the intermediate aggregators and forwarded to the Meter Data Management System (MDMS). The infrastructure used in this network should be reliable, real-time an...
متن کاملDeveloping sustainability criteria for urban infrastructure systems1
Research in the area of sustainable urban infrastructure reflects the need to design and manage engineering systems in light of both environmental and socioeconomic considerations. A principal challenge for the engineer is the development of practical tools for measuring and enhancing the sustainability of urban infrastructure over its life cycle. The present study develops such a framework for...

To deliver tangible sustainability outcomes, the infrastructure sector of the construction industry needs to build capacities for the creation, application and management of ever increasing knowledge. This paper intends to establish the importance and key issues of promoting sustainability through knowledge management (KM). It presents a new conceptual framework for managing sustainability know...
متن کاملA framework for implementing sustainable tourism in national parks of Iran: development and use of sustainable tourism indica-tors in Boujagh National Park, Iran
Despite the fact that national parks and other protected areas are mostly adopting the sustainable development process, it was found that sustainability has yet to be perceived pragmatically in these areas. Due to its process, this paper presents a monitoring framework approach to develop and implement indicators for sustainable tourism. To illustrate the application of the framework, a set of ...

The impact of extreme events is in reality the interaction among three systems; the natural environment, the human community, and the built environment the infrastructure that supports human activities. The sustainability of our infrastructure depends upon knowledge of the natural environment – for example, the research on global warming and its impact on meteorological events such as storms, d...
